95pts(WA) "The 2003 IX Proprietary Red Wine, a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot, demonstrates how fabulous the fruit from the estate vineyard can be. Beautiful scents of crushed rocks, spring flowers, licorice, charcoal, blackberries, and cassis are stunningly pure and complex. This opulent, intense, well-balanced, compelling, full-bodied wine appears to have softened considerably over the last year. This twenty acre vineyard in the Pritchard Hill area of Napa Valley has been carved out of the rugged, rocky terrain of a one hundred and twenty acre hillside parcel that comprises IX Estate and is also home to Colgin's gravity fed winemaking facility. The low yielding vineyard overlooks Lake Hennessey and at 900-1400 feet the elevation insures a cooler than average temperature which gently ripens the fruit and preserves many subtle nuances in flavors.
