Winery Notes 

Our most coastal vineyard, Derbyshire, is located just 2 km from the Pacific Ocean and borders the Hearst Ranch where our Pinot Gris yields have been anywhere between 200 and 2000lbs per acre. The variability is due, in large part, to the proximity of the vineyard to the Pacific Ocean and the strong inherent winds generated during critical growing phases. In 2011, we struggled with the amount of crop that was set. We received just over 2.09 tons within 11.10 acres or about 0.19 tons (377 lbs) per acre! Typical coastal sites see yields near 2000 lbs per acre or 1 ton per acre. For growers, this is very challenging on the pocketbook and not economically viable. Although we only were able to produce less than 150 cases, the wine is amazing in it’s distinctiveness. The grapes were picked at 22.6 Brix to capture the vibrancy of this variety. Whole cluster pressed direct to tank. Long, cool 28-day fermentation with BA11 yeast in stainless steel tanks enhanced the minerality and aromatic character. Aged 8 months in stainless steel. Bottled June 20, 2012.
